When I reached the top of the hill, there was an old sage waiting noiselessly for me. "You are the ugliest member of your family," he said. When I reacted in surprise, he said abruptly: "So your weakness is found. Self-confidence is lacking in you; these words will have no truer application. Beware the flatterer," and vanished into the woods.
The flatterer works by communicating subconsciously to his victim, "I'm meeker than you, thus I submit to your authority, and therefore you are good for showing favor to me." The object is to make the victim feel positive about himself for doing something outside of his interest, namely allowing a parasite (the flatterer) to attach. When the flatterer must seduce an entire civilization to a state of sleep so they can be destroyed, he must first install the self-congratulatory sense of ethics that is a powerful motivational tool. It's easy, says the flatterer. Things are either 'right' or 'wrong' in an absolute sense, and, no matter what the outcome, you can feel pride and righteousness in doing what is 'right.' Even if you are conquered. This amounts to a de facto pacificism, since the victim, busy telling himself he is good for not fighting back, will not recognize the imminence of fatality until it is too late - and then will seek only salvation and faith in knowing that, in terms of the fantasy the flatterer has created for him, he has vanquished 'wrong' with 'right.' That's all symbolism, however, and doesn't apply to the real world at all; where pagan religions used their gods as symbols to describe the workings of their world, Semitic religions preach a symbolism that is disassociated from reality into its own world outside of this one, which is more significant, somehow, even though it's only the world of imaginary symbols. Of course, this plays right into technological needs: "This isn't a forest, full of living creatures - this is 80 hectares of highly useful freeway fronting land zoned for developing apartments," as if somehow money was the only justification one needed to destroy something. "Bring in more immigrants, they buy our products." It also makes society easy to control. "Bad Hussain, Good America! Women-abusers versus freedom lovers! God Bless America!" you scream through every media outlet you have, carefully separating them into two "sides" of an issue to appeal to the rational and emotional aspects of humanity, respectively. Soon the social horde rushes off to fight your war. Another secret of human politics: want a defender? Convince some local warlord that you are unduly prosecuted, and that he gains favor from your god by being nice to you. Superstitious, somewhat fearful, he obeys; you praise him for having something no one else does, whether 'right' or 'open-mindedness.' Soon he is more watchful of your defense than you can be. People, especially those rendered lonely and broken by the complexities of a modern society, will do anything for a touch of self-esteem. A flatterer has nothing to give but promises, but one of these applied to an area so intangible that there's no verification but a 'good feeling,' will make a servant out of a master. Right now, you're being asked to defend a country in the middle east against her ancestral enemies, because it's "the right thing to do." There are many dictators in this world and many people developing nuclear/biological/chemical weapons, but most are ignored because the second Holocaust may be upon our Israeli "allies." Not only that, but at home people are telling you to give up what makes you a European by bloodline, and to mix with other groups and take on a generic appearance, and possibly cultural/intellectual outlook. You're praised as 'open-minded' if you want to lose your cultural and racial uniqueness, and become one of the "Future Race-less Shoppers of Tomorrow." These trends are connected by one very obvious thing: both are manipulations, brought on by flatterers in the movies. The heroine in "Save the Last Dance" is more 'right' than the 'wrong' racist society around her; the 'peacekeepers' who machine-gun Afghan civilians are better than the 'wrong' Osama bin Laden and his gang of 'terrorists.' Beware the flatterer.
